How to Find the Right Radiator for Your Excavator or Loader
Choosing a replacement radiator for an excavator, wheel loader or other piece of heavy equipment is not always as simple as matching the overall size.
Two radiators can look very similar but still differ in mounting points, inlet and outlet positions, core dimensions or connection details. Installing the wrong part can create fitment problems and unnecessary delays.
The most reliable way to identify the correct radiator is to use the information already available from the machine and the existing part.
Start With the OEM or Part Number
If the original radiator has an OEM number or part number, this is usually the best place to start.
The number may appear on:
- The original radiator
- A metal plate or label
- The equipment parts manual
- Previous purchasing records
- The packaging of an earlier replacement part
Providing the OEM or part number makes it easier to check whether a matching radiator is already available.
However, part numbers are not always easy to find. Labels can be damaged or removed, and older machines may no longer have clear identification.
If the number is unavailable, other information can still be used.
Provide the Equipment Brand and Machine Model
The next useful reference is the machine itself.
For example, provide:
- Equipment brand
- Machine model
- Machine type
- Any available serial or configuration information
A request such as:
“Radiator for a 20-ton excavator”
is usually too general.
A request that includes the equipment brand and exact model gives the supplier much more useful information for checking the correct radiator.
Different versions of the same machine family can use different cooling parts, so model information should be as complete as possible.
Send Photos of the Existing Radiator
Photos are especially useful when the OEM number is missing or uncertain.
A clear front photo can help identify the overall structure, but one photo is often not enough.
For a more useful comparison, take photos of:
- Front of the radiator
- Back of the radiator
- Top tank
- Bottom tank
- Left and right sides
- Inlet and outlet connections
- Mounting brackets
- Any labels or numbers still visible
These details help compare the existing radiator with available replacement parts.
Photos are also useful for identifying differences that may not appear in a basic product description.
Check the Overall Dimensions
When matching a radiator by dimensions, measure the actual part rather than estimating from the machine.
Useful measurements include:
- Overall height
- Overall width
- Overall thickness
- Core height
- Core width
- Core thickness
The overall dimensions show whether the radiator can fit within the available installation space.
Core dimensions are also useful because two radiators with similar outside dimensions may have different internal structures.
Use millimeters when possible and make sure the measuring points are clear.
Confirm the Inlet and Outlet Positions
The position and direction of the inlet and outlet connections are important.
Check:
- Inlet location
- Outlet location
- Connection diameter
- Connection direction
- Distance from the edges
- Any additional small ports or fittings
A radiator with the correct overall dimensions can still be unusable if the hose connections are in the wrong position.
This is one of the reasons why dimensions and photos should be checked together.
Check the Mounting Points
Mounting details are another common source of mismatch.
Compare:
- Mounting brackets
- Bolt-hole positions
- Side mounting tabs
- Top or bottom supports
- Distance between mounting points
Even small differences can affect installation.
If possible, include a simple drawing or photo showing the distance between the main mounting points.
Do Not Identify a Radiator by Appearance Alone
Many heavy-equipment radiators share a similar rectangular design.
A front photo may show:
- Similar fin layout
- Similar tank shape
- Similar overall proportions
but important differences may still exist around the sides, back or mounting structure.
For this reason, appearance should be treated as one part of the identification process, not the only reference.
The best result usually comes from combining several pieces of information.
What Information Should You Send to a Supplier?
For a normal replacement inquiry, prepare as much of the following as you have:
- OEM or part number
- Equipment brand
- Machine model
- Product photos
- Overall dimensions
- Core dimensions
- Inlet and outlet positions
- Connection diameters
- Mounting-point dimensions
- Required quantity
You do not always need every item.
If the OEM number and machine model clearly identify the radiator, fewer details may be required.
For older, modified or non-standard equipment, more measurements and photos are usually helpful.
What If a Standard Replacement Does Not Fit?
Sometimes the original cooling system has been modified, the machine is an older model, or an available replacement part does not match the existing installation.
In these cases, a non-standard radiator may be required.
Custom adjustments can include:
- Overall dimensions
- Inlet and outlet positions
- Mounting points
- Connection layout
- Product configuration
For custom work, the supplier may ask for additional information such as detailed measurements, technical drawings or a physical sample.
The amount of information required depends on how different the new radiator is from an existing design.

Before Placing an Order
Before confirming a replacement radiator, check the final specification against the existing part.
At minimum, verify:
- Part number, if available
- Machine model
- Overall dimensions
- Connection positions
- Mounting locations
- Product appearance
If something does not match, clarify it before production or shipment.
A few extra minutes spent checking the radiator before ordering can prevent much larger installation problems later.
Need Help Matching a Radiator?
If you have an OEM number, machine model, radiator photos or dimensions, DEYU can use the available information to help check the required cooling part.
For non-standard applications, dimensions, mounting details and connection positions can also be reviewed for customization.
